Learn how to measure, size, and hang a canvas curtain panel on an oak cabinet, with practical steps for a clean fit using FRAMA's SL Components curtain fabric.

Quick answer

Measure the cabinet opening, not the door, add allowance for hems and overlap, then hang the canvas panel from a top rail or rod so it clears the floor by about 10–15 mm. Use a canvas curtain fabric intended for an oak cabinet, such as FRAMA's SL Components option, to keep the material and fit consistent.

Why canvas behaves differently from lightweight curtain fabric

Canvas is a firmly woven fabric with little stretch, so a panel cut to the exact opening size will not close easily and may pull at the hanging points. Plan a slightly deeper side hem or a small overlap so the panel can sit flat without tension.

Because canvas holds a crease, fold and press hems before hanging rather than relying on the weight of the fabric to pull them straight. This is also why a canvas panel is less forgiving of uneven measurements than a thin cotton curtain.

When a fabric door cover is the right choice

A fabric cover softens the look of an oak cabinet and hides shelf contents without replacing the door. It suits open or doorless cabinet frames, or cabinets where the door is removed or left open.

It is less suitable where the cabinet is in a damp room, where the fabric may stay damp against the oak, or where you need a rigid, lockable closure. In those cases, keep the original door and treat the fabric as a decorative layer only.

Steps to measure and hang the canvas panel

  1. Measure the opening, not the door: Measure the inside width and height of the cabinet opening at the top, middle, and bottom. Record the smallest width and the tallest height, because an out-of-square frame will otherwise leave a gap at one corner. If the three width readings differ by more than about 5 mm, treat the smallest figure as your true width.
  2. Add allowance for hems and overlap: Add 20–30 mm to each side for a double-folded side hem, plus 30–40 mm to the top for the hanging sleeve or rod pocket. Add 20–30 mm to the bottom hem. Canvas frays easily, so cut with sharp shears and fold the raw edge under before stitching. Cut a test square from the offcut and press a hem first to confirm the fabric folds without bulk.
  3. Decide the hanging method before cutting: Choose a top rail, a rod through a sleeve, or clip rings. A sleeve gives the cleanest line for a cabinet; clips let you adjust height later. Mark the fixing points on the cabinet frame, not on the thin back panel. Check that the fixing screws will bite into solid oak, not just the cabinet back.
  4. Set the finished drop: Hang the panel temporarily and mark the finished length with the cabinet in place. Aim for 10–15 mm clearance above the floor or shelf below, so the canvas does not drag or pick up dust. Re-check the drop after the panel has hung for a day, since canvas can relax slightly.
  5. Press and stitch the hems: Press the side and bottom hems with a dry iron on a medium setting, using a pressing cloth if the canvas has a coated finish. Stitch close to the folded edge, then press again so the panel hangs flat. Test the iron on an offcut first; a hot iron can leave a shine on canvas.
  6. Hang and check the clearance: Fit the panel to the rail or rod, close it, and check that it overlaps the frame evenly on both sides and clears the floor. Adjust the side hems or the fixing height rather than trimming the bottom, which is harder to reverse. Open and close the panel a few times; if it catches, reduce the overlap rather than forcing it.
